One person died Aug. 2 in a vehicle collision on Interstate 65 near Whitestown.

Two semi-tractor trailers and three passenger vehicles were involved in the crash. When emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at approximately 10:30 p.m. they arrived to a fully engulfed semi-tractor trailer fire near the 131.8 mile marker on I-65 southbound.

A preliminary investigation determined one semi tractor-trailer slowed, due to the ongoing construction projects on I-65, which resulted in another semi tractor-trailer colliding into the rear end of the trailer, according to the Whitestown Metropolitan Police Dept. The impact of the collision started the fire, which quickly spread, engulfing the semi tractor-trailer.

The collision created a secondary collision involving three passenger vehicles. One individual was fatally injured.

All other persons involved in the crash reported no injuries, according to the WMPD. Due to the fatality, the Boone County Fatal Alcohol Crash team is completing an investigation of the accident. Alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor at this time, according to the WMPD.
