The Westfield Chamber of Commerce has taken notice of Anna Skinner’s quick ascent after joining the Westfield Lions Club in 2016.

In July, Skinner, 26, the managing editor of Current in Westfield and three other Current editions, became the first female and youngest member to become president of the Westfield Lions Club.

Skinner has received the Emerging Leader Award (Young Professional) as part of the Chamber’s Lantern Awards. The awards were scheduled to be presented Nov. 5.

“I’m thrilled to accept this award because I was born and raised in Westfield, I graduated from Westfield High School, and I built the foundation for my career in Westfield,” Skinner said. “Westfield is the place I learned to lead, so it is reassuring to see that my community recognizes me as an emerging leader. Just as I have done so since graduating WHS, I will continue to take steps to lead the community to a brighter future, and I will continue to serve the community as frequently as I can.”

Cindy Olson, an administrative assistant with the City of Westfield, has been awarded the Beacon Award for Citizen of the Year.

“I reap many benefits from volunteering and being active in our Westfield community,” Olson said. “For me, it is an opportunity to be social. It gives me a sense of purpose and a feeling of being productive. Most of my connections are with organizations serving youth, such as the Westfield Youth Assistance Program, Student Impact, Open Doors food pantry and the Rotary Club of Westfield. I’m not expecting or looking for recognition. There are many people who do and achieve wonderful things in our community.

“To have been singled out does fluff my feathers. I am honored to have been chosen for the Chamber’s Citizen of the Year award.”

Jim Ake and Westfield Steel were each named winners of the Legacy Award.

Other Lantern Awards were given to Wendy Vivirito, Wick Award (Volunteer of the Year); Mark Keen, Shamrock Excellence Award (Westfield Washington Schools); Grindstone on the Monon, Spark Award (New Business of the Year) and Rotary Club of Westfield, Globe Award (Outstanding Service Organization). Cambria Hotel & Suites and Sundown Gardens were in contention for Business of the Year, and a follow-up story will be published after the winner is announced.
