Carmel school board incumbent wins; other at-large seat too close to call

Incumbent Katie Browning has been re-elected to serve another four years on the Carmel Clay Schools board of trustees, but the race for the second at-large seat is still too close to call.

The unofficial totals show Browning with 23.71 percent of the vote in the nine-way race. Louise Jackson finished in second place with 12.92 percent of the votes, only 68 votes ahead of Anne Poindexter.

Hamilton County Election Administrator Beth Sheller said all votes have been counted but that there are 117 ballots with missing or mismatched signatures that are waiting on affidavits, which are due by Nov. 11. Hamilton County Clerk Kathy Kreag Williams said there are also approximately 50 provisional ballots to be reviewed.

The Hamilton County Election Board will release official totals on Nov. 13.

With the vote so close, Jackson said her campaign will not declare victory until the official totals are released.

Candidates have until noon Nov. 17 to file a verified petition for a recount. Poindexter said she does not plan to do that.

“Hamilton County has the best election officials anywhere,” Poindexter said. “I have complete confidence in their election results and no intention of requesting a recount.”

Poindexter

Browning, who was first elected to the board in 2016, thanked her supporters for allowing her to continue serving Carmel students and teachers.

“I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from my community,” she said. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve our school district.”

Other school board candidates and their vote totals are Beth Glynn, 11.18 percent; Paige Miller, 10.3 percent; Timothy Moehl, 8.46 percent; Benita Hutt, 7.58 percent; Sam Harris, 7.2 percent; and Susan Chamberlin-Dawes, 5.83 percent.
