Police chase in Carmel leads to arrest of suspect accused of stealing mail 


An Indianapolis woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing mail out of mailboxes before leading police on a pursuit in Carmel and Westfield.

Makayla Lynn Burkart, 23, has been charged with resisting law enforcement, theft, driving while suspended prior and criminal recklessness. She also had outstanding warrants out of Marion and Grant counties.

Carmel police responded to the 14000 block of Staghorn Drive on April 1 after receiving a suspicious activity report about an individual removing mail from mailboxes. Police located a vehicle matching the suspect’s and and initiated a traffic stop, but the driver fled.

The pursuit ended in the parking lot of the Westfield Menard’s on Greyhound Pass, where Burkart was taken into custody.
