Boone County Senior Services will host the inaugural Senior Olympics from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3. The event will involve competition between seniors 60 and older in events such as euchre, bowling, golf, line dancing and bocce ball.

“We’re just trying to get folks engaged in some physical, mental and recreational activities,” said Anita Bowen, executive director at BCSS. “These are opportunities for people to get out and be with other older adults – maybe try something they haven’t done before.”

Seniors will compete for medals or just for fun. The events were chosen as a result of a survey taken within the Boone County senior community.

“We have a variety lined up, so if someone isn’t confident as a swimmer, maybe they’ll come bowl with us. Or, we even have several events that are going to be non-medal events. It’s just purely for fun like line dancing and the nature walk,” Bowen said. “We tried to incorporate 10 events so there will be a little something for everyone.”

The opening ceremony Aug. 31 in Lebanon will include a torch lighting and a keynote address from Josh Bleill, a double amputee and military veteran who serves as the community spokesperson for the Colts.

“He will inspire the participants in the Olympics to get out there and do what they can to maintain the highest quality of life possible, motivating people to live their best life,” Bowen said. “We’re thrilled to have him come and kick off our Olympics.”

The events will be held over four days with varying hours. The Olympics are open to all seniors, but in order to receive a medal you must reside in Boone County. The cost to participate is $10 with an additional fee for golf or bowling. Fans are encouraged to attend. For more information visit booneseniors.org.
