HEPL board to vote on officers before new member is seated

The Hamilton East Public Library Board of Trustees will vote on new officers during its Aug. 24 regular meeting. The meeting has been rescheduled from 6:15 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the large public meeting room of the Noblesville Library, 1 Library Plaza.

No reason was provided for changing the time of the meeting, and board president Laura Alerding did not respond to a request for comment.

The meeting will be Alerding’s last as a library board member. Her term ends this month, and she was not reappointed to her seat by the Noblesville Schools Board. That board instead chose to appoint Noblesville High School English teacher Bill Kenley.

Unless the board delays the vote on new officers, Kenley will not be seated until after a new board president is selected.

The board also will discuss its collection review policy, and whether to put “The Fault in Our Stars” by Indiana author John Green back in the teen section. That book, along with many others in the teen section, was moved to the general collection because of stipulations in the board’s collections policy.

Green called out the HEPL board on social media regarding the policy and the story gained national attention. Alerding later said that Green’s book should not have been moved and that the policy had been misinterpreted by library staff.
