Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township announces annual staff awards

The Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township recently honored three staff members with annual awards.

Gracie Sahm MCIT
Sahm

Gracie Sahm was named Teacher of the Year, Julie Hils is the Classified Staff Member of the Year and Conni Davis is the Administrator of the Year, according to an announcement from the district.

Sahm is the culinary arts teacher at McKenzie Center for Innovation & Technology. A native of Indianapolis and a restaurant industry veteran, Sahm has worked at MCIT since 2008.

“Ms. Sahm excels in fostering meaningful relationships with students,” MCIT Director Chauntee Smith stated. “By nurturing a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere, she empowers students to express their creativity, take ownership of their learning and pursue their culinary passions. Her ability to develop a strong student-teacher relationship enhances both the academic experience and the overall well-being of the students she serves.”

Sahm has a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from Ball State University. The announcement stated that with 16 years of classroom experience. Sahm is a master teacher in the classroom and at Bernie’s Place, the student-run restaurant at McKenzie.

“Sahm’s effective instruction and management provide valuable experiential learning for students, enhancing the reputation of the culinary arts program within the district and throughout greater Indianapolis,” the announcement stated. “From mastering fundamental cooking techniques to exploring global cuisine, she provides comprehensive instruction that equips students with the skills and knowledge needed for success in the culinary and hospitality industry.”

Hils

Hils, a registered nurse, is the school nurse at Indian Creek Elementary. According to the announcement, she started as a part-time nurse at Mary Castle Elementary in 2005, joining the Community Health Network school nursing team in 2010 to continue serving Lawrence Township students.

“Ms. Hils embodies positivity and professionalism, tacking every situation with a can-do attitude while creating a safe and welcoming environment for students,” Indian Creek principal Kevin Kemper stated. “Students look forward to seeing her, knowing they will receive compassionate care and support.”

Hils is a native of Cincinnati and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. She was a surgical nurse in Cincinnati for 20 years before moving to Indianapolis in 1999 with her husband and two boys. Both of her children attended MSDLT schools.

Conni Davis
Davis

Davis, who received the 2024 Susan Jordan Administrator of the Year award, is principal of the Early Learning Center at Winding Ridge Elementary. She has served in the MSD of Lawrence Township as an elementary teacher and building administrator since 1998 and has been principal of the NAEYC accredited Early Learning Center at Winding Ridge since 2011, according to the announcement.

“The 2024 Susan Jordan Administrator of the Year represents Lawrence excellence on all levels,” Superintendent Shawn Smith stated. “Our winner is the definition of a servant leader, putting student development and wellbeing at the forefront of every educational decision. Conni cares for our youngest learners while fostering a love of learning. She has built a strong school culture with high expectations for students and staff, fostering pride for the entire Winding Ridge community.”

An Indianapolis native, Davis has a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Purdue University. She completed a teacher certification program in elementary education at Indiana University Indianapolis and completed her master’s degree at Butler University in educational administration in 2003.
