INDIANAPOLIS – Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) enactment. CHIPRA is a bi-partisan federal legislation aimed at ensuring children continue to have access to health care.

St.Vincent Health is proud to be selected as Indiana’s federal grantee to help enroll children in the Hoosier Healthwise/Medicaid programs.

“About eight percent of Hoosier children have no health insurance,” said Sherry Gray, director of Rural and Urban Access to Health (RUAH) at St.Vincent Health. “We want to help those that are eligible receive coverage, so they can stay healthy, strong and reach their full potential in school.”

St.Vincent Health is working with St. Mary’s Health System in Evansville to educate families about Hoosier Healthwise/CHIP and help them enroll children for this important coverage. As part of the federal grant, targeted outreach efforts are being made in Madison, Vanderburgh, Gibson, Posey, Pike, Spencer and Warrick counties.

“We are working at food banks, schools, churches and other community gathering places to bring this important information to parents who may not be aware of this coverage,” said Elizabeth Skafish, system manager of Health Access at St.Vincent Health.

Since the start of this outreach, more than 565 Hoosier children have been assisted through the application process for Hoosier Healthwise/CHIP

“We are honored to be able to help educate families and enroll their children so they can receive healthcare coverage.” said Katie Humphreys, system vice president and chief advocacy officer, St.Vincent Health. “Through this healthcare grant, more Hoosier children have access to preventive care, regular checkups, and can maintain their health.”
