Kari Castetter, a 2008 Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate, is among 33 young women from throughout Indiana that have been selected to serve in the 2012 500 Festival Princess Program. Castetter, a senior at Ball State University, is majoring in nursing and will graduate in December. She also served as Hamilton County 4-H Fair Queen in 2008.

“I am very honored and blessed to be a 500 Festival Princess. When I first found out the news, I was shocked and filled with excitement,” she said. “Two hundred and seventy-four girls from across the state interviewed to be a Princess. When I applied, I did not expect to be one of the 33 chosen. I am so grateful for this opportunity and cannot wait for what lies ahead!”

Castetter said she decided to apply for this program for a combination of several reasons.

“I had numerous people tell me how absolutely amazing the program is and I’ve known previous Princesses who described their time as the best time of their lives,” she said. “I’m very passionate about Indiana, being involved, community service and leadership; all things that are also important to the program. I felt as though I really had no reason not to apply.”

As all race fans know, May is a very exciting and busy time of the year, and Castetter is looking forward to the Indianapolis 500 and all the events leading up to it.

“I’ve already met some amazing people over the past few weeks, and I am ecstatic to spend more time with these people, meet more people and for the opportunity to be so busy with such a wonderful program,” she said.

With all the race and community events 500 Festival Princesses attend, which is Castetter looking forward to most? The Chase 500 Festival Kids’ Day, she said.

“I love children and think an entire day centered around them is a wonderful idea,” said Castetter. “This event gives children in the community an opportunity to learn about racing, make crafts, play games, win prizes, participate in Rookie run and more – for free!”

This year’s 500 Festival Princesses represent 13 Indiana colleges and universities, and 21 cities and towns throughout the state. Applicants must be between 18 and 23 years old, single and legal residents of Indiana. The young women were selected based on communication skills, poise, academic performance and community and volunteer involvement.

Other 500 Princesses from Hamilton County include Carmel’s Emily Boaz, a junior at Saint Mary’s College, and Molly Clark, a sophomore at Butler University.
