Shortly after 7:00pm, last night, Fishers police officers responded to a man standing on the railing of the Brooks School Road Bridge over Interstate 69. While responding to the scene, officers learned the man and his wife had been arguing in their car. The man stopped the car on the bridge. As he exited the car he told his wife he wanted to kill himself and threatened to jump off the bridge.
Officers quickly worked to get traffic stopped, in both directions, on Interstate 69. Sergeant Wayne Druelinger, Sergeant Andrew Burks, and Officer Seth Goldstein were the first officers to arrive at the bridge. The officers attempted to speak with the man; however he was very upset and would only scream and curse at the officers. Sergeant Eric Patton arrived and attempted to convince the man not to jump. The man ignored officers and attempted to jump. The officers were able to grab him as he fell. As the man hung from the bridge, he attempted to punch an officer in the face. Officer Adam Brockman rushed over to assist and together the five officers lifted the man over the railing and safely onto the bridge surface.
The man was detained and transported to Community North Hospital for a mental evaluation. No officers were injured during this rescue.
