Beginning Oct. 11, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra will begin its 39th concert season.

This season, guests of the symphony can look forward to performances from pianist Sean Chen, the Anderson University Choruses, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and many more.

Led by the acclaimed artistic director and conductor David Bowden, everything from classical masterpieces and familiar pops works will echo through the corridors of Carmel’s Palladium.

“We are delighted to present such a variety of performers and musical styles,” Bowden said. “The significant partnerships with regional organizations and the flair and sparkle of world-class guest artists make this an extraordinary season of music from the heart and for the soul.”

The season begins with APA Classical Fellow and Van Cliburn medalist Sean Chen in Grieg Piano Concerto with Sean Chen on Oct. 11. The artistry of Chen will be on full display in a performance of Grieg’s familiar Piano Concerto. Tchaikovsky’s powerful Symphony No. 4 combines deep emotion, beautiful melodies, and orchestral virtuosity with a thrilling conclusion.

“It will be remarkable,” Bowden said. “It will be beyond incredible.”

The Nov. 8 concert, Beethoven’s Fifth, features the composer’s much-loved symphony that begins with arguably the most famous four notes in the entire symphonic repertoire. The orchestra is joined by the Anderson University Choruses for Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living, a profoundly moving expression of solace, hope, and ultimately, peace, conveying great comfort for all who have experienced loss, which Bowden said has already had a very emotional impact on him. Beethoven’s Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus opens this compelling program.

“People won’t believe what this requiem will do to them,” Bowden said. “And you will leave wanting that to play at your funeral.”

Season subscriptions are available by calling the Carmel Symphony at 844-9717. Single tickets can be purchased beginning by visiting TheCenterPresents.org or by calling the Center’s Box Office at 843-3800. Discounts for students are also available: the $5 YouthPASS for High School and younger, and the $10 CollegePASS.

The Carmel family tradition of Indiana University Health Holidays! – featuring the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and baritone Rich Vale – promises to be a heartwarming variety of holiday music, including Silver Bells, music from Home Alone, Forrest’s There is Faint Music, Dwyer’s Arruru, Rutter’s Donkey Carol, Leck’s arrangement of Hine ma tov, Angels We Have Heard on High, and White Christmas.

The CSO salutes veterans with The Texas Tenors – a classically trained trio infused with country roots – on Jan. 30 and 31, presented by Pedcor Companies. The highest ranking vocal group of all time on America’s Got Talent, The Texas Tenors routinely sell out performances all over the world. These two concerts mark their Central Indiana debut and are not included on the subscription season. All veterans receive half off their individual ticket purchase.

In a special Valentine’s Day performance on Feb. 14, the CSO pays tribute to Marvin Hamlisch with Indiana University’s The Singing Hoosiers – along with pianist Fred Moyer, an audience favorite – in A Musical Valentine: Through the Eyes of Love. The program includes music from A Chorus Line, Ice Castles, Sophie’s Choice, The Way We Were, including the titles One, Nobody Does It Better, and I Finally Found Someone. Moyer will play Addinsell’s Warsaw Concerto and The Entertainer from The Sting.

Ellis Island: The Dream of America, presented March 14, is a sweeping multi-media work featuring actors and video projection. The work is a powerful testament to the experience of thousands of immigrants who entered America through that iconic portal – a reminder that, for so many who have come here, America has been a symbol of freedom and opportunity for a new life. Wasson’s American Fanfare and Dvořák’s Cello Concerto round out this program.

On April 11, the CSO will present the medalists of the pre-eminent International Violin Competition of Indianapolis in Gold-Silver-Bronze. Each winner will perform a solo work with the orchestra. The concert also features two Ravel pieces – Pavane for a Dead Princess and Daphnis and Chloe Suite No. 2 – as well as Kabalevsky’s Overture to Colas Breugnon.

Family Fun! – the Carmel Symphony’s signature interactive family concert – returns on March 29. In this popular Sunday afternoon concert designed to delight and spark the imagination, the orchestra performs excerpts of the world’s great classics in “Greatest Hits for Kids.” Children of all ages are invited on stage to watch music being made, and afterwards are encouraged to try out the instruments they just heard at the Instrument Petting Zoo. The concert also features a performance by the winner of the Carmel Symphony’s 34th Annual Young Artist Competition.

At select concerts, ticket-holders are invited to arrive early at 6:45 p.m. for Music Matters featuring David Bowden for a behind-the-scenes discussion of the music of the evening.

Season subscriptions are available by calling the Carmel Symphony at 844.9717. Single tickets can be purchased beginning by visiting TheCenterPresents.org or by calling the Center’s Box Office at 843.3800.
