Dr. Meei-Huey “May” Jeng, an educator, cancer researcher and a small business owner, has filed to be an school board candidate for Zionsville Community Schools. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, M.S. from Iowa State University, and B.S. from Tunghai University in Taiwan.

Before joining the faculty at the University of Virginia and Indiana University School of Medicine, Jeng did her postdoctoral training at University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Human Oncology, and then Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. She has taught and mentored at every level, including Ph.D. candidates, college and high school students.

For more than a decade, Jeng has called Zionsville her home. In that time, she and her husband raised four children, three of whom are Zionsville Community High School graduates. Her fourth, Lee-Ann, is in fifth grade at Zionsville West Middle School. Recently, Jeng has cut back on academic pursuits to spend more time with her family.

“Zionsville has great schools. I am a proud mom of three ZCS graduates. My son Lee-Wei, daughter Lee-Sien and adoptive daughter Ming-Jung’s lives have been touched by great teachers who prepared them well for their graduate education,” Jeng said.

Jeng said she believes her skill set as a critical thinker and scientist will be an asset to the board.

“As a businesswoman and researcher, I am knowledgeable in budget preparation and the implementation process that is needed to tackle budget issues and address long-term sustainability,” she said.

Jeng has served in other academic and professional roles, including participation as a reviewer for the National Institute of Health, the Department of Defense, and the American Cancer Society, as well as several non-profit organizations like the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She also served as a performance reviewer for the Philadelphia Department of Health and as a judge for the Intel Science Competition for high school students. In 2013, she received the Excellence in Service Award from Indianapolis Mayor Gregory Ballard.

“I am committed — not just to our great school system, but to making it even better,” she said.
