Westfield Fire Dept. to put twist on trick-or-treating Halloween night

Friday night in Westfield kids of all ages will be dressing to impress, but a group wearing fire fighter outfits may not be trick-or-treaters in costume but the real deal. The Westfield Fire Dept. will again be doing its popular Reverse Trick or Treat, helping to bring some Halloween cheer to kids in neighborhoods all over the city.

“People like to stop by the fire stations on Halloween, but sometimes those stations are out of the way,” Westfield fire fighter Steve Lamp stated. “So, we decided to start going to them instead of making them coming to us.”

All three stations in Westfield send out a truck equipped with candy and firefighters. As the trucks make a main path through the neighborhoods, firefighters make stops to hand out sweets to kids in the area. The goal is to get to as many subdivisions as possible during the city’s three-hour window for trick-or-treating.

“It’s always a good time,” Lamp stated. “You get to see the kids and they’re all so happy and enjoy it.”

Asked whether any of the youngsters try to climb aboard the engines for a look around, Lamp lets out a chuckle.

“I think they’re more interested in the candy,” he stated.

Trick-or-treat hours for Westfield are 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
