Westfield kids of all ages dressed to impress on Oct. 31, but a group wearing firefighter outfits were not trick-or-treaters in costume but the real deal. The Westfield Fire Dept. participated in its Reverse Trick or Treat, helping to bring some Halloween cheer to kids in neighborhoods across the city.

“People like to stop by the fire stations on Halloween, but sometimes those stations are out of the way,” Westfield firefighter Steve Lamp stated. “So, we decided to start going to them instead of making them come to us.”

All three stations in Westfield sent out a truck equipped with candy and firefighters. As the trucks made a main path through the neighborhoods, firefighters made stops to hand out sweets to kids in the area. The goal was to get to as many subdivisions as possible during the city’s three-hour window for trick-or-treating.

“It’s always a good time,” Lamp stated. “You get to see the kids and they’re all so happy and enjoy it.”

Asked whether any of the youngsters try to climb aboard the engines for a look around, Lamp lets out a chuckle.

“I think they’re more interested in the candy,” he stated.
