‘Pawn,’ ‘attack,’ and ‘queen’ are just a few of the words heard from a room at the library on a Saturday morning; all from a game of chess. Chess is one pastime the Hussey Mayfield Memorial Library is highlighting this month.

Every Saturday for the month of January, the Hussey Mayfield Memorial Public Library in Zionsville is hosting a chess club from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Whether players are chess masters or have never played, people from all ages attend and play for free. Part of the initiative is for players to learn the rules of the game or teach others who are still learning, face various opponents and meet new friends.

Susan Yearling, a member of the chess club said there is a tournament at the end of the month for anyone interested.

How to play chess

The game set consists of 16 pieces, ranging from a pawn; which can only move forward one space at a time until it is attacking, all the way to the queen; which can move forward, backward, and diagonally unlimited spaces, as well as attack from any direction. The game of chess only requires two players and even young children can learn to play. At first it is a little tricky to understand all of the rules, but once mastered, chess is great fun that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
