Roundabout open at 161st and Oak Ridge

Road construction in Westfield is dying down as winter nears, and one of the biggest completions next to U.S. 31 is the roundabout placed at 161st Street and Oak Ridge Road.

City officials held a ribbon cutting for the roundabout Nov. 2.

“These roundabouts help us keep our commitment to creating a safe city for our residents,” Mayor Andy Cook stated in a press release. “Roundabouts consistently are proven to be safer than four-way stops, and they actually move traffic through an intersection with less congestion.”

In addition to the completed construction, asphalt trails will border the perimeter of the roundabout, which aids in the Safe Routes to School Plan for Oak Trace Elementary School. The plan aims to improve safety for students who walk or ride their bikes to school, as well as encourage more students to do so.

Funds from the 2014 utility sale in addition to funding from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization paid for the $1,328,503 construction cost.

According to Cook, the roundabout construction is some of the last road construction planned in Westfield for the year, next to some resurfacing on Spring Mill and Carey Roads, and the extensions of Westfield Boulevard and Mill Street.
