As Whitestown’s Anson development continues to expand rapidly, the Main Street area hasn’t seen much growth in recent years.

But on Dec. 5 the older part of town got a boost with the opening of the Designer Sewing Center, located near the new Heritage Trail. Natalie and Steve Reiners, longtime Whitestown residents, opened the shop, which will sell sewing supplies and fabrics and offer a variety of classes for adults and children.

The idea to set up the center first came to Natalie when she was approached by friends and neighbors about other sewing projects. That was when Natalie realized that many people in her community had not had the opportunity to learn to sew.

“The art of being able to design and make your own clothes – from concept to completion – is something that is hard to find these days,” she said.

Natalie has had a lifelong passion for sewing, a craft she learned from her mother and grandmother in Canada. She made it into her career, working her way up to the role of principal designer for Deni M and La Quinta Apparel, which can be found at Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue.

To help people in Whitestown get started, Natalie is offering some holiday specials. The first 32 paid registrants for the Sew Like a Pro Course will receive a gift card for a Brother simplicity SB530T sewing machine. This course includes four two-hour sessions, a workbook, fabric, patterns, instructions and the opportunity to learn on the SB530T.

The second special is for her Serge Like a Pro class, which consists of four three-hour sessions. The first 18 paid registrants will receive a gift card for the Juki MO-51e serger sewing machine.

Classes are scheduled to begin Jan. 4.
