Thomas R. Hendricks, 68, passed away Jan. 10 in Carmel after more than four decades of defeating numerous illnesses. He was born, Jan. 5, 1948, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Jack and Helen Ernst Hendricks.

He graduated from Lane Tech High School in Chicago and received Bachelor and Master degrees in biology from Southern Illinois University. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for several years in the early 1970s. He taught school at Rochelle Township High School, in Rochelle, Ill., for 32 years prior to his retirement.

Tom was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church; a volunteer for CASA; involved in the Therapy Dog Program in Rockford, Ill.; and because of his love for animals, especially his dogs, he served as a volunteer for the Humane Society of Indianapolis.

He enjoyed the outdoors. He loved golf, canoeing and kayaking, biking, and gardening. Above all else, Tom enjoyed his role as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather of five.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Jan. 16 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 4780 E. 126th Street in Carmel. Pastor Ross Stackhouse will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church.
