A service celebrating the life of former Butler basketball star Andrew Smith will take place at 5 p.m. Jan. 17 at Traders Point Christian Church. Smith, who grew up in Zionsville, lost his battle with cancer on Jan. 12 at the age of 25.

Smith’s wife, Samantha, posted her first update since Andrew’s death to her blog, kickingcancerwiththesmiths.wordpress.com, to announce the service.

“Many ask ‘how are you doing?’ and the honest answer to that is that I am awful,” she wrote. “I’ve lost the love of my life. Every day gets harder because it’s a day more since the last time I’ve seen him or felt his arms around me. Truly, just the worst days of my life. But I am holding onto hope in our Lord and Savior for I know that He is good, no matter what.”

Doors will open at 4 p.m., and tables will be available for attendees to sign up with Be The Match, a registry that matches donors with patients in need of a bone marrow transplant. Andrew Smith underwent a bone marrow transplant during his treatment.

“This is a cause so near and dear to our hearts and one swab of the cheek can save someone’s life,” Samantha Smith wrote.

Samantha Smith has requested that flowers be sent to Flanner & Buchanan in Zionsville or that a donation be made in Andrew’s honor to Be The Match.

The memorial service will be live streamed at TPCC.org, and second sanctuary within the church will be open and video streaming the service as well. The church is at 6590 S. Indianapolis Road in Whitestown.
