The Caring Hands Camp is a weeklong opportunity for local students to serve their neighbors in Boone Co., and organizers are looking for teen and adult counselors who can help make it happen.

Participant registration for the camp organized by the Zionsville Boys and Girls Club filled up on the first day of registration. The camp is for students age 5 to 14 and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 13 to 17 and July 11 to 15.

“The whole point of this camp is to teach kids they don’t have to be an adult to make a difference,” Camp Director Sarah Webler said.

Adults and older teens are still needed to make a difference in the camp, however.

“There is no planning involved for the counselors,” Webler said. “Just be there for the kids and be a great example.”

Each day of the camp week centers on a theme: cleanup and beautification, animal protection, senior giving, hunger relief and Kids for Kids. The campers participate in a service project attached to the specific theme.

A lemonade stand is offered on the Kids for Kids day, and the proceeds are given to a kid-friendly organization each year. Other past project examples include cleaning wheelchairs and walkers, activities with residents at nursing homes and building park benches.

“We always try to make sure the service projects are different for the repeat campers,” Webler said.

The week also includes more traditional summer camp activities as well.

“It’s still camp, so the kids are there to have fun doing activities and crafts as well,” Webler said.

Counselor volunteers must commit to the entire week. If interested, contact Sarah Webler before April 22 at 317-410-0893 or [email protected].

“We are open to all who are passionate about helping kids,” Webler said.
