Scholarships for social media campaign – Indiana high school and college students are being encouraged to put their smartphones to good use by urging others to “Drive Now. TXT L8R”. Several state agencies have partnered to award $5,000 scholarships to students who compose the most creative and viral social media posts on Twitter, Instagram and Vine. Students may register their public Twitter accounts and read contest rules at www.txtl8r.in.gov.

Census results for 2015 – The fastest-growing county in Indiana between July 1, 2014, and July 1, 2015, was Boone Co., whose population rose 2.5 percent over the period. Boone Co. was followed by Hamilton Co. at 2.1 percent. Hamilton Co. added 6,419 people over the period, more than any other county in the state. This information is based on annual population estimates for each of the nation’s counties, county equivalents, metropolitan statistical areas, and micropolitan statistical areas since the 2010 Census and up to July 1, 2015.

Boone REMC selects students for trips – Boone REMC will sponsor educational trips for seven local students this summer. Middle school students selected to attend Touchstone Energy Camp are Addy Laucks, Ella Oberweiser, and Hannah Wilhite. High school students chosen for the Indiana Youth Cooperative Tour to Washington, D.C. include Thomas Argentine, Rachel Kubina, Leah Skillington, and Graham Oberweiser.

Poetry reading – Poetry on Brick Street will present poet Catherine Bowman at 6:30 p.m. on April 7 at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center, 225 W. Hawthorne St. Bowman will read her poetry, which will be followed by a brief intermission and an open mic. The event is free and open to the public.

National Library Week – Celebrate National Library Week from April 10 to 16 at the Zionsville library. Drop by the second floor reference desk for a Why I Love My Library memo note. Fill it out and get a piece of chocolate. At the youth reference desk, kids can fill out an entry to win a basket of books.

Candidate Meet and Greet  – The public is invited to the Zionsville Candidate Meet and Greet from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 12 at Zionsville High School, Student Activities Center, Entrance #27. All candidates for local, state and national elections are invited. Come and meet the candidates, ask questions and make an informed choice.

ZCS Community Day – Zionsville Community Schools will hold Community Day from 9 to 11 a.m. on April 16 at the Transportation Center, 9770 E. 600 S. Hiring managers will be available to talk about job opportunities for bus drivers, bus aides and food service positions.

Sounds in the Village concert – Christ Lutheran Church, 600 N. Ford Rd., presents string musicians Li Li and Charles Morey in concert at 3 p.m. on April 10. The 45-minute program will feature works by Bach, Mozart and Rachmaninoff. The concert is free and open to the public.

Little League raffle – Zionsville Little League is holding its annual fundraiser, which is a raffle to be held April 23. First prize will be $500 cash. Other prizes will be awarded as well. Tickets are $5 each or $20 for 5 tickets and may be purchased from any Zionsville Little League player or at the Opening Night Ceremony on April 8 at Lion’s Park. Superhero 5K – Dress up in your favorite superhero costume and join us for the Superhero 5K Run/Walk on April 23 at the Boone Co. Fairgrounds. Proceeds will benefit Boone Co. Child Advocacy Center. Race day registration begins at 8 a.m. A one-mile fun run will begin at 9 a.m. and the 5k will begin at 10 a.m. Online pre-registration is available at www.boonecac.org.

Witham transport service available – As a result of a donation from the Witham Health Services Foundation, Witham Hospital recently purchased a non-emergent transport vehicle. Aquatic center programs – The Zionsville Aquatic Center offers programs for all ages and levels of swimmer. Registration is now open for summer classes, Summer Splash and summer swim league. New this season is Silver Eagles Aquatfit, a senior aquatics group hosted by Zionsville Meadows on the first Tuesday of every month at 11 a.m. For registration or more information, visit www.pool.zcs.k12.in.us.

Pennies for Patients success – ZCHS raised $16,245.07 during our Pennies for Patients fundraising campaign benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This is the first year for any school in Indiana to raise more than $15,000 for this cause. Fundraising activities included a Sadie Hawkins Dance, faculty vs. student basketball game, and Duct Tape Your Teacher to the Wall.

Veteran speaks to students – Zionsville High School history students had the opportunity to hear from Vietnam veteran Steve White. Students were able to learn firsthand about the Vietnam War from Mr. White’s personal involvement in the US Army. Mr. White was an E6 staff sergeant who served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970, and was awarded a Bronze Star during his tour of duty.  Mr. White is currently employed at the high school.

Sail and Power Squadron elections – The Hoosier Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadron, announces the installation of its 2016-2017 bridge members. New officers are: Commander – Robert Beall; Executive Officer – David Drashil; Education Officer – Damon Davis; Assistant Education Officer – John Reichmann; Administrative Officer – Holly Settles; Secretary – Mark Winzenread; Treasurer – Nancy Beall; Communications Officer – Jason Settles. Ten-digit dialing – Starting now, all consumers in central Indiana’s 317 telephone area code are encouraged to use all ten digits of the phone number, including area code, to make local phone calls. This will help consumers make the transition to mandatory ten-digit dialing for local calls within the 317 area code, which begins in Sept.

Heavy trash collection – The Town of Zionsville will provide a heavy trash collection day during the week of May 9 on your regular collection day. This is an opportunity to dispose of items not normally accepted by the weekly trash service. For more information, visit www.zionsville-in.gov and type Heavy Trash in the search box.

Artisan Marketplace – The Indiana Artisan Marketplace is a chance to buy one-of-a-kind artwork and artisan food directly from over 100 Hoosiers. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 9 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 10 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Expo Hall. Zionsville resident Jennifer Berger will be on hand to display her fiber creations of animals, monsters and ornaments.

BCSSI art contest – Boone County Senior Services presents its third annual art contest for individuals age 60 and over. Entries in painting and photography will be accepted from 2 to 4 p.m. April 28 at the Lebanon Public Library, 104 E. STEM scholarships available – Nominations are open for the 2016 Mr. and Miss Math and Mr. and Miss Science awards. These awards recognize outstanding high school seniors for their performance in science, technology, engineering, and math. Winning students receive $1,000 college scholarships through Indiana’s CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings Plan. Nominations can be submitted through April 10 at https://secure.in.gov/apps/mathscienceawards/.

Free tax help – The AARP offers free tax help to those age 60 and older with low to moderate income. Sessions will be held at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. through Apr. 14.  Reservations are required and can be made by calling 317-873-3149.
