Animals and their owners will come together for one cause at the Bark for Life relay,  organized by the American Cancer Society.

The event has been incorporated into the annual Fall Festival and will be from at 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 11 at Lions Park. Cost is $20 for one dog and $5 for any additional dogs. There is no fee for owners.

“Individuals are not only affected by cancer, but their pets are, as well. This is a program that’s intended to reach both audiences, because the fight against cancer is the fight against cancer regardless of who’s going through that, whether it is a family member, a friend, a neighbor or your favorite four-legged friend,” American Cancer Society manager Jordan Brewer said.

Brewer became a caregiver for his mother at a young age when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has been involved in the cause ever since.

Canines and their owners will participate in a ceremonial walk honoring those who have struggled, both human and animal, with cancer. The event will feature speakers who have been affected by the disease and will offer games and contests.

”Dogs are a primary caregiver for cancer patients,” Brewer said. “So this is a way to celebrate those dogs that have been there for individuals who have lost their fight, who are still continuing to fight, or who can honor someone that they know through this event.”
