Clean Water grants awarded – The Indiana State Dept. of Agriculture and the State Soil Conservation Board recently awarded $938,651 in Clean Water Indiana grants to 34 soil and water conservation districts across the state. Hamilton County, in partnership with Boone, Clinton and Madison counties, was awarded $55,000 in grant money to be used for conservation practices and reducing water pollution.

Community Garden accepting applications – The Plots to Plates Community Garden is accepting applications for plots for the 2017 season. The garden is located on the grounds of Carmel Middle School. Plots rent for $10 per season and are available for Carmel residents or CCS employees. For more, contact [email protected].

Coat drive – Local orthodontist David Judy and the Judy Orthodontics Team are sponsoring Warm Up for Winter through Nov. 30. Donations of new or gently used winter wear such as coats, hats, gloves and scarves can be dropped off at the Judy Orthodontics office at 3965 W. 106th St., Suite 150. Donations will benefit the Julian Center.

Quilters meeting – The Quilters Guild of Indianapolis North will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 4 at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, 1605 E. 106th St. Lynn Hodge of Quilt Expressions in Fishers will speak on Quilted Post Cards. The color of the month is red-orange. Extended BMV hours – In advance of Election Day, BMV license branches will extend hours Nov. 7 and 8 to issue ID cards and driver’s licenses that may be used for identification at a polling place. All branches will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 7 and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 8. License branches will only process new, amended or replacement ID cards, and renewed, amended or replacement driver’s licenses and learner permits. New driver’s licenses and learner permits will be processed provided the customer has previously completed all required testing.

Students hold mock elections – On Nov. 8, students across Indiana will elect their own governor, president and senator in a show of active citizenship through Indiana Kids’ Election (IKE), an award-winning mock election program. IKE is based on the premise that voting is only occasionally done by inspiration but more often done by habit. With its special emphasis on encouraging students to develop one’s voting habit at an early age, IKE attempts to emulate the election process as closely as possible.

Civil War Roundtable – The Hamilton County Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 at Carmel City Hall. Greg Biggs will speak on the role of the Union cavalry in the Tullahoma Campaign. The public is invited and admission is free.

Veterans Day program – Carmel Elementary will host a Veterans Day Program at 9 a.m. and again at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 in the school’s gymnasium. The event will feature the entire student body singing a musical tribute to veterans. All veterans and their families are invited as honorary guests of Carmel Elementar. Those who attend will receive special recognition and a gift during the ceremony. A short reception is planned for all veterans concluding the program.

Naloxone distribution – The Hamilton County Health Department, 18030 Foundation Dr., Noblesville, will host a naloxone (Narcan) distribution from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9. Naloxone is an opiate antidote that reverses the effects of an opiate overdose. Sponsored by Overdose Lifeline, Inc., the distribution will provide limited supplies of naloxone on a first-come, first-served basis.

Choir to perform on Veterans Day – The Carmel Elementary Choir will perform at the City of Carmel’s Veterans Day Ceremony at noon Nov. 10 at the Tarkington Theatre within the Center for Performing Arts. More than 100 fourth and fifth graders from Carmel Elementary will participate by singing a compilation of musical tributes to recognize those who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Carmel students, who are finalists of the City of Carmel’s annual poster and essay contest, will also be announced during the ceremony.

Bridge grand opening – Hamilton County and the state of Indiana came together to bridge the White River and connect the White River Campground and Strawtown Koteewi Park. The bridge was constructed from historic bridges from Wayne County and  Washington County and a third piece in Hamilton County. The grand opening will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at White River Campground. This is a free event with live music, pizza, games and more.

Beauty Lounge trunk show – The Beauty Lounge, 2325 Pointe Pkwy, Suite 110, is hosting a trunk show from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 10 featuring items for purchase and artwork from local artists. Items will be featured from Robert Goodman Jewelers and Chan Luu, a Los Angeles-based contemporary lifestyle brand offering handcrafted designer jewelry, scarves and apparel. Rascia’s Creative Cakes will provide light desserts.

Quilters meeting – The Quilters Guild of Indianapolis will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at Second Presbyterian Church, 1605 E. 7700 N. Meridian St. Guild member Leigh Layton will present a trunk show of her colorful art quilts. Layton’s presentation will be the second in a series titled Launching Our Stars, giving guild members an opportunity to present lectures and workshops in their area of expertise. High school open house – Carmel High Schooli invites you to our Community Open House from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 13. Take this opportunity to meet with teachers, administrators, counselors and current students to learn about Carmel High School’s nationally recognized academic, extracurricular and athletic programs.  Facility tours will also be available. This is open to everyone.

Tinsel and Tails – The Hamilton County Humane Society presents Tinsel and Tails from 6 to 10 p.m. on Nov. 17 at Ritz Charles. This celebration of the most remarkable adoption and survivor stories sells out every year, with more than 600 attendees filling the ballroom. Poetry reading – Rosaleen Crowley, artist and poet, will read from her new book of poems and paintings, “Point of Connection,” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 17 at Black Dog Books, 115 S. Murder Mystery Dinner – Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation invites the public to its Murder Mystery Dinner from 7 to 10 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Monon Community Center. The event is open to adults ages 21 and older and costs $30 per person. The registration fee includes a four-course meal and one drink ticket. Before the meal, guests will receive a character identity with a short script and diners will work together to identify which character is the murder suspect and solve the mystery. Winter art contest – The Carmel Arts Council is announcing its winter art contest for artists in grades K-12. All entries must be winter-themed original artwork on 8 ½ x 11 paper and submitted to SoHo, 620 S. Range Line Rd., by Nov. 20 at 3 p.m.

Bolt for the Heart 5k – The fifth annual Bolt for the Heart 5k run/walk will be held at 9 a.m. Nov. 24 (Thanksgiving Day) at the Palladium Center Green, 355 City Center Dr. All proceeds will go toward purchasing AEDs for Indiana State Trooper patrol cars. Kids Count conference – The Indiana Youth Institute’s 2016 Because Kids Count conference is being held Nov. 29-30 at the Indiana Convention Center. Online registration is available through Nov. 14. Scholarships available – Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana Scholarship Program offers students the opportunity to apply for one of four scholarships honoring the applicant’s heritage to celebrate the growing diversity in Indiana. Applications are being accepted from eligible high school seniors in one of four ethnic categories: Asian, Hispanic, African-American and all others. Applications are due by Jan. 18, 2017.
