Operating a business can be expensive. Anderson Schoenrock, CEO and co-founder of Scan Digital, knows that better than anyone. Scan Digital helps consumers take old, out-of-date media and digitize it. The California-based company was founded in 2007 and has experienced rapid growth.

“In 2014, the cost of operating a business in California really became a hindrance in terms of continuing to grow and scale the business. In the summer of 2014, we made the difficult decision to explore options to either expand outside of California or potentially move the entire business elsewhere,” Schoenrock said.

Schoenrock spent that summer traveling and exploring his options. He narrowed the choice to Grand Rapids, Mich. and Indianapolis.

“I came and spent a week here, and we toured a bunch of different areas in Indy,” he said. “We came out to Fishers and met the guys at Launch Fishers. We met with the folks at the city. We came back the following day and had a meeting with Mayor (Scott) Fadness. Really, quite honestly, it was one of those moments where everything just clicked for us.”

Schoenrock believed in the vision outlined by Fadness and Launch Fishers to build the city around entrepreneurship. He moved a few key employees to Fishers in 2014. By 2015, the entire operation in California was shut down and Scan Digital was operating solely in Fishers.

“The most rewarding thing to see is where we’ve moved has enabled our employees to accomplish things like buying a house they really had no ability or path to doing in California,” Schoenrock said. “When you have employees who are coming in thrilled to be here because of the lifestyle it’s been able to provide for them with their kids, that’s a whole different level of rewarding to me as a business owner and entrepreneur.”
