Brooks selected for committees – Rep. Susan Brooks was selected as Chairwoman of the House Committee on Ethics. The committee is the bipartisan supervising ethics office for the House of Representatives. Brooks also was selected by Speaker Paul Ryan to serve as the speaker’s sole designee on the Republican Conference Steering Committee in the House of Representatives. The Steering Committee is responsible for making committee assignments for Republican members of the House and selecting chairmen for each committee in the House.

Free smoke alarms and tests – The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign is a multi-year effort to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent. People of all ages are vulnerable to home fires. During the course of this campaign, the Red Cross in Indiana saved the lives of three children, a 73-year-old grandmother and two adults through the installation of new smoke alarms. The Red Cross encourages everyone to call 1-888-684-1441 to make an appointment to test existing smoke alarms and/or install free alarms in your home.

Fundraising run a success – The fifth annual Bolt for the Heart Family 5K run was held on Thanksgiving morning. It was a great day, with no snow, no rain and record attendance numbers. There were 2,800 participants, up 31 percent from last year. More than $185,000 was raised, which will be used to purchase 160 automated external defibrillators for the Indiana State Police cars.

Corrections officers needed – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office will be hiring up to 13 new correction officers. Benefits for full-time officers include a competitive salary, health insurance, paid holidays, deferred compensation plans, pension plan and opportunities for advancement. Children’s art featured – Artwork inspired by the study of famous artists, their history and culture will be featured at the World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery in December. The artistic works will come from students at Orchard Park Elementary School and be featured through the end of the month. The gallery is open from 2 to 4 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Art contest winners – The Carmel Arts Council has announced the winners of the Winter Art Contest. First place winners include: Crosy Long, Sophia Shen, Ava Reita, Brodey Long, Ellie Riddell, Avery Carlisle, Shannon Larkey, Sophia Hanna, Felicia Sanders, Sarah Scheibelhut, Nate Burgess, Nikki Vasil and Emma McLean.

Santa to visit Bub’s – Santa is coming to Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream. Meet the Man in Red while enjoying dinner, crafts, face painting and fun! Santa will visit Bub’s in Zionsville from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 13. He will be at Bub’s in Carmel from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 14.

Christmas Eve services – Carmel United Methodist Church will offer five services on Christmas Eve. All services will include candlelight and traditional Christmas hymns. The services are as follows: 3 p.m. – Contemporary; 5 p.m. – Family; 7 p.m. – Traditional, childcare offered; 9 p.m. – Traditional; 11 p.m. – Traditional, communion offered.

Holiday light recycling – The ability to recycle used holiday lights will be offered at White’s Ace Hardware, 731 S. Range Line Rd., from now through the end of January. The Carmel Clay Schools Green Teams will be offering recycling at the individual schools through Jan. 5. For more, call 317-571-2673.

Free science lectures – Anderson University’s School of Science and Engineering is offering a series of lectures that are free and open to the public. The lectures start at 7 p.m. and are located in Hartung Hall (room 101). Upcoming topics include: Feb. 16 – What do the Pharmaceutical Industry and the Manhattan Project Have in Common? Christmas concert – Local children’s choirs, including the Carmel Children’s Choir, will participate in Angels Sing at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St. Other participating choirs include the Fishers Children’s Choir, Cantantes Angeli, Bel Canto and others. Tickets are $15 at the door. Students, seniors and military can purchase discounted tickets for $13.

Free ACT practice exams – College Tutors, 1 E. Carmel Dr., is offering free practice ACT tests for students wanting the experience. Upcoming dates are Jan. 14, Feb. 4 and Mar. 4. There is no charge to take the exam. Register online at CollegeTutors.com/carmelin.

Scholarships available – Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana Scholarship Program offers students the opportunity to apply for one of four scholarships honoring the applicant’s heritage to celebrate the growing diversity in Indiana. Applications are being accepted from eligible high school seniors in one of four ethnic categories: Asian, Hispanic, African-American and all others. Applications are due by Jan. 18.
