Soybean innovations – Carmel resident and Purdue University senior Viktoryia Stolyar recently competed with her team in the Student Soybean Innovation Competition. Stoylar’s team created a soy-based industrial lubricant called OilSlick. It’s non-toxic, all-natural, environmentally friendly and non-flammable. It could possibly be used for agricultural equipment, marine environments, households, body shops, and industrial machinery.
Academic All-Stars named – Forty high school seniors from Indiana have been named 2017 Indiana Academic All-Stars, including several from local schools. They include: Elise Zaniker, University High School; Neil Thompson, Zionsville High School; Michael Wang, Carmel High School; Ashton Murray, Fishers High School; Alessia Bernocco, Guerin High School; Tyler Zhang, Hamilton Southeastern High School. In addition, Zaniker received a $1000 scholarship from Purdue University.
College news – Roberto Alas has been awarded a Fry Scholarship from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. Chelsea Yedinak graduated Cum Laude from Butler University with duel majors of English Literature and German Language. Kara Glavan recently received a student employee scholarship from Campus Dining Services at the University of Missouri.
Essay contest winners – The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple has sponsored the National Heritage Essay Contest for 36 years. The contest is open to sixth grade students in public, private and parochial schools in the Greater Indianapolis area. Several of this year’s winners are from Hamilton County schools and include: Nithya Murthy, Riverside Middle School – first place; Kaitlin Miller, Creekside Middle School – third place; Alissa Fuhrman, Carmel Middle School – honorable mention.
Veterans to lead parade – Korean War veterans are to be honored as the Grand Marshal Unit at this year’s CarmelFest Parade. A family member or friend is also invited to walk alongside the vehicle and carry a poster with the veteran’s picture. Classic car owners are needed as well. Golden Hoosier nominations needed – Nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Golden Hoosier Award. The award honors Hoosier senior citizens for their lifetime of service and commitment to their communities. The award is considered one of the highest honors given by the state to senior citizens. Applications can be found at lg.in.gov and are due by May 24.
HCLA applications – The Hamilton County Leadership Academy is accepting applications for the 2017-18 class. HCLA is a leadership program that identifies and prepares informed leaders for our community. The program is open to Hamilton County residents or those with business or civic activities within the community. Waterpark opening – The Waterpark at the Monon Community Center will open for the season on May 27 at 11 a.m. Located in Central Park, The Waterpark offers several amenities including two Adventure Slides, FlowRider, AquaClimb Wall, Plunge Slide, Lazy River, Kiddie Pool and an Activity Pool. The Activity Pool is home to a new play feature this summer suitable for children of all ages. The new feature has a futuristic appearance and includes a 12-foot waterslide in addition to more than ten spray features.
New miniatures exhibit – The Furnishing Touch, an exhibit that tells a history of American home furnishings in miniature, has opened at the Museum of Miniature Houses. The exhibit, that runs through May 28, begins with The Mannerist style (1600-1700) that was popular with English settlers in America, through The William and Mary Style, popular from 1695-1730, and ends with the Colonial Revival style that started in the 1870s and is still found in popular home trends today.
Relay for Life event – Cancer survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and community members are invited to the annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Westfield-Sheridan to be held from noon to midnight on June 3 at Carmel Civic Square. During Relay For Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around the track or path. Church rummage sale – Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St., will host its semi-annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 3. The sale will feature more than 17,000 square feet of clothing, electronics, home and garden, housewares, china, books, toys and much more. Emerging Leaders applicants sought – The Emerging Leaders Project is a free, yearlong development program designed to help build the Democratic Party’s bench in Indiana. Each year 40 Hoosiers, aged 21-40, are selected to participate in four one day training sessions that expose them to various aspects of political campaigns, policy and public service. Native Habitat tours – St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 3106 E. Carmel Dr., invites you to tour our Native Habitat and Rain Garden on the church grounds with naturalist guides this summer. All tours are open to church members and the general public. Tour dates are June 14, July 12, and Aug. 9. All tours begin at 7 p.m. Each month will feature different blooming prairie plants.

Photo contest – The Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District is sponsoring its annual photo contest for Hamilton County residents. Each division has three categories – Conservation at Work, Weird Trees of Hamilton County, and Native Plants (Urban or Agriculture.) Digital files must be submitted by June 28. Arts and education grants available – The Telamon Foundation, the charitable arm of Telamon Corporation, has announced that its grant application for 2017 is now available. This marks the Telamon Foundation’s fourth annual round of grants that focus primarily on the Foundation’s pillars of arts and education. Summer STEM camps – Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation is offering several STEM programs for kids and teens this summer.
