Zionsville Cares is partnering with Mental Health First Aid USA in August and October to educate the public about youth mental health first aid. They are offering a one-day course for adults to learn more about the mental health of youth ages 12-18.

The Mental Health First Aid course will introduce participants to warning signs of mental health problems in young people. It will also help adults build a good understanding of the importance of early intervention and teach them how to help an adolescent in a critical situation.

“As someone who has worked and volunteered in the mental health field for the past 12 years, providing the mental health first aid training curriculum is particularly close to my heart,” instructor Natalie Samuels said. “This Mental Health First Aid for Youth helps to empower adults to recognize the signs of a mental health need in the youth they know, and how to link that youth with a professional.”

Participants will learn a variety of important aspects of mental health through role playing and simulations. The course will educate adults on the risk factors common among adolescents and how to provide support for youth developing signs and symptoms of mental illness.

The course outlines a five-step action plan: Assess for risk of suicide or harm, listen without judgment, give reassurance and information, encourage appropriate professional help, and encourage self-help and other support strategies.

The course will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 26 and Oct. 7.  It is free to attend, but space is limited and registration is required. Register by emailing Samuels at [email protected].
