The Hamilton County Traffic Safety Partnership, will be setting up sobriety checkpoints around Hamilton County to aggressively deter, detect and arrest drivers who drive impaired.

A sobriety checkpoint will be conducted Friday, Aug. 11, 2017 and in the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 12.

The HCTSP is a consortium of law enforcement agencies in Hamilton County working to increase the usage of seatbelts, to combat aggressive driving, and to decrease impaired driving with the overall goal of creating a safer Hamilton County. The HCTSP is comprised of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Dept., Fishers Police Dept.,Carmel Police Dept., Noblesville Police Dept., Westfield Police Dept. and Cicero Police Dept., with the assistance of the Indiana State Police.

According to the HCTSP, in Indiana in 2014, alcohol-related traffic crashes killed 101 people, accounting for approximately 13 percent of all fatal crashes and injured another 1,880 people. Approximately 750 people are convicted of an impaired driving offense each year in Hamilton County and nearly 100 of those are repeat offenders.

At the sobriety checkpoint, law enforcement officers evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. If the officer detects that alcohol may be involved and that the driver may be impaired or if some other issue arises, the vehicle will be directed to a pull-off area for further investigation.

Questions regarding checkpoints should be directed Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Miksha at 317-776-8595.
