Road closure – Nearly 1,900 people are expected to participate in the Run(317) 5K Aug. 31 in the Arts & Design District. Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between 3rd Ave. and 1st Ave. NW from 6 to 9 p.m., and many nearby roads will have lane closures during this time.

Girl Scout registration – Girl Scouts will hold Registration Night at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 31. All girls in grades K-5 are invited to learn about scouting and join a troop. All Carmel-Clay elementary schools will hold the registration meetings simultaneously, so attend the meeting at your own elementary school.

Talking Through Unity and Civility – St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St., presents Talking Through Unity and Civility from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 9. In partnership with Desmond Tutu Center, the Muslim Alliance of IN, the ACLU, Women4Change Indiana and the Islamic Society of North America, John Krall and Khizr Khan will discuss age-old American tradition of agreeing to disagree with civility and keeping our nation united and strong. Pet fashion party – Pet Valu, 11503 Spring Mill Rd. and 1356 S. Range Line Rd., will host a nationwide fall fashion party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 9 to launch its new seasonal apparel for dogs, cats and other animals. Families can bring their pets to the stores for tons of fun, and Pet Points Plus members will be offered special deals (and anyone can sign up free of charge!).

Carmel Reads fall kickoff – On Sept. 9 the Carmel Clay Public library will kick off its fall Carmel Reads program. Events include a showing of Wall-e at 1 p.m. and a drop-in bookmark craft from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Also, learn about the selected titles and events that are planned. You can also get supplies and information for the Upcycling Book Challenge coming up in October.

Free seminars for seniors – CarDon & Associates is partnering with Indy Mature Living to help educate Indianapolis-area seniors about issues related to home ownership and post-retirement downsizing. The free seminars will highlight senior living options for those over the age of 55, downsizing, and other educational topics. Upcoming topics include: Downsizing – Senior Panelists, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at Aspen Trace, 3154 S. Women of Style show – Riverview Health Foundation and Riverview Health Auxiliary will host Women of Style on Sept. 14 at Ritz Charles. Day Furs and The Secret Ingredient will showcase unique, stylish fall fashions. Registration and shopping begins at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will begin at noon. Arts and education grants available – The Telamon Foundation, the charitable arm of Telamon Corporation, has announced that its grant application for 2017 is now available. This marks the Telamon Foundation’s fourth annual round of grants that focus primarily on the Foundation’s pillars of arts and education. Food pantry collections – AlphaGraphics has partnered with Carmel United Methodist Food Pantry to stock its shelves with personal care items. From now through September, donations of personal care items can be dropped off at AlphaGraphics, 1051 3rd Ave. SW during normal business hours. Items that are needed include: shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, tampons and any other toiletries.

Women’s support group – Women who have recently been divorced or widowed are invited to the National Celebration of Women in Transition from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 16 at Coast to Coast Imports, 9445 Threel Rd., Indianapolis. The event is hosted by the Wildflower Group, a support group for women in transition. The topic will be First Time Car Buying Tips. 5K Walk/Run registration open – Registration is now open for the first ever Connect 2Help211 5K Walk/Run. Connect 2Help211 exists to provide help to people who don’t know where to turn. Think of 211 as the 911 of human services (disaster relief information, domestic violence help, etc.) The event will be held on Sept. 23 at the Lilly LIFE Center, 800 S. East St. The race begins at 9 a.m. and will be followed by a kid’s Track Trot. To register, visit EventBrite.com.

Sustainable living seminar – The library will host a sustainable living seminar at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27 in the program room. Key topics include water resources, agriculture, infrastructure and more. Climate change experts will discuss the local impact of key findings.

Native tree sale – The Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District is holding its annual fall native tree sale. This year 35 varieties of native trees and shrubs are available. All offerings are $26 each and will arrive in three-gallon containers and be approximately 3- to 5-feet tall at delivery. Pre-orders are required and are due Sept. 28. Trees can be picked up from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds llama barn. Order forms and online ordering are available at hamiltonswcd.org.

Flag education program – The American Legion will hold its annual Flag Education Test during November. Fourth graders in participating schools can take a test of flag knowledge. Two winners from each state will win $1000. The test is based on the comic book “Our Country’s Flag.” School that wish to participate must enroll at IndianaLegion.org by Sept. 29.

Waste water plant tours – A tour of Carmel’s waste water treatment plant, 9609 Hazel Dell Pkwy., will be given from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30. Dress comfortably for outside and wear sturdy shoes. Tour will be held outside, rain or shine. To register, call 317-844-3362.

Art Without Borders show – St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St., presents Nea Kavala Art Without Borders from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 24. Art Without Borders is a project started by Kayra Martinez to help refugee families in Greece express their emotions through art. Art will be on display and available to purchase, with proceeds going to the refugee families.

Legislative internships – Indiana House Republicans are now accepting internship applications for the 2018 legislative session. Internships are open to college sophomores, juniors and seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. This paid program during the spring semester gives college students the chance to work one-on-one with state legislators while seeing firsthand how laws are made. Congressional App Challenge – The 2017 Congressional App Challenge (CAC) is now open to students in the Fifth Congressional District who have not yet graduated from high school. The CAC is designed to engage students from across the country in computer science and coding. Students of any age, whether in elementary, middle, or high school are encouraged to compete by creating and exhibiting an app for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. Scott Wise honored – Scott Wise, founder of Scotty’s Brewhouse and Thr3e Wise Men, was recently recognized by the Indianapolis Office of Disability Affairs for his commitment to hiring Hoosiers with disabilities, who comprise five percent of his workforce. In a recent ceremony at the Indianapolis Arts Garden, Wise was honored with the 2017 Employer Award for his advocacy efforts.

Chaucie’s Place appointment – Executive Director Dr. Jack Powell has announced the appointment of Margaret Blandford to the Smart Steps Program Specialist position at Chaucie’s Place.

Jason’s Deli relocates – The Jason’s Deli 12405 N. Meridian St. in Carmel has relocated to 11621 Fishers Station Dr. in Fishers. It is in the former Stacked Pickle location in Hamilton Crossing Center. The new deli opened Aug. 14. A representative for Jason’s Deli said the move was necessitated because of a decision by landlord Kite Realty. Officials from Kite Realty did not respond to a request for comment.

Hiring event – CareSource, a nonprofit health plan, will host a two-day hiring event for customer care advocates at the Renaissance Indianapolis North Hotel, 11925 N. Meridian St. in Carmel. The goal is to fill 60 full-time positions based at a new call center opening in Woodland Corporate Park this fall. The hiring event is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 29 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 30. Candidates are asked to bring multiple copies of their resume and expect to spend two to three hours to accommodate interviews and on-site testing. Fastest growing companies – Several Carmel based companies recently made the Inc. list of fastest growing private companies in America. These include: JDA Worldwide, Mainstreet, Rook Security, Shepherd Insurance, American Specialty Health, and enVista.

Mayor to speak at real estate breakfast – Mayor Jim Brainard will speak at the Commercial Real Estate Hot Topic Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 14 at Broadmoor Country Club, 2155 Kessler Blvd. W. Dr. The mayor will outline his vision for the future of the Meridian Street Corridor. This event is free to attend. RSVP at MyICBR.org

Being Mortal – The Carmel Clay Public Library continues its Stethoscope Series with Being Mortal. Join Dr. David Mandelbaum from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 23. Dr. Mandelbaum is co-director of Franciscan Hospice Care. Following a screening of the film Being Mortal, Dr. Mandelbaum will lead a discussion. This event is free but registration is preferred by calling 877-888-1777.

Fight the New Drug – Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, 14598 Oak Ridge Rd., will host Fight the New Drug at 7 p.m. Sept. 25. Designed for students in seventh grade and older, and their parents, the program teaches about the dangers of pornography in an age-appropriate way. They will present the scientific proof that porn changes brain chemistry and can lead to addiction. There is no cost to attend but a free-will offering will be taken.

Free meditation class – Sahaja Meditation Indiana presents a free mediation class at 7 p.m. on Fridays. Learn to reduce stress and experience inner peace through meditation. The class will be held at Old National Bank, 1430 S. Range Line Rd. For more, visit IndianaMeditation.org.
