4-H Open House – Hamilton County 4-H will hold an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds, 2003 Pleasant St., Noblesville. 4-H is an educational program where youth learn by doing. They create, build, research, sew, cook, and many other activities. Stop by anytime to learn more about the programs and to pick up project manuals. Express Transit fares to decrease – Effective Jan. 1, the fare to ride Hamilton County Express Public Transit will change. The fare will be lowered from $5 to $3 per one-way trip.  A 10-ride pass for $30 will be available. HCE is discontinuing its one-month pass for unlimited rides and its student discount. To request a ride on Hamilton County Express, call 317-773-2668 Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Civil War Roundtable – The Hamilton County Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Carmel Clay Public Library. Dr. Brian Dirck will present Lincoln and the Constitution. The public is invited and admission is free. Please note location change.

Recycle holiday lights – From now through Jan. 11, The Carmel Clay Schools Green Teams, along with Carmel Utilities, Tech Recyclers and White’s Ace Hardware are working together to offer a holiday light recycling drive for Carmel residents. Residents may recycle used holiday lights at White’s Ace Hardware, 731 S. Range Line Rd. In addition, the Carmel Clay Schools Green Teams will be offering recycling at the individual schools.

Town Hall meeting – State Legislators Tony Cook (R-Cicero), Donna Schaibley (R-Carmel) and Victoria Spartz (R-Noblesville) will host a town hall meeting at 10 a.m. Jan. 13 at Westfield City Hall, 130 Penn S. Spartz encourages residents of Senate District 20 to attend and share their thoughts on issues affecting the community and state.

Winter reading program – The Carmel Clay Public Library introduces its winter reading program for adults. The program will run from Jan. 15-Mar.12. Participants can earn restaurant coupons for reading, with a chance to win a $50 gift card to a local business or restaurant. For more information, call 317-814-3987.

STEM fest 2018 – The Indiana Pacers will host STEM Fest 2018 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 11 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. This interactive event is open to students of all ages and their families. It is a great opportunity to learn how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are used in sports and other careers. Cost is $10 per person and includes admission to the Pacers game. Police department hiring – The Carmel Police Dept. is accepting applications for the position of police officer. Envirothon contest now open – Registration is now open for high school students to sign up for this spring’s Central Region Envirothon contest hosted by the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District. Each team will study resource problems in five environmental areas. Teams may consist of members from a variety of organizations: clubs at school, Scouts, home schooled students, and 4-H Clubs. 2017 Neediest Cities – Personal finance website WalletHub took a look at cities across the nation to determine where Americans are the most economically disadvantaged. Factors they considered include child poverty rates, number of uninsured residents, homelessness and others. Indianapolis was tenth on the list of 180 of America’s neediest cities.

Judge to take senior status – Judge William T. Lawrence of US District Court for the Southern District of Indiana has notified President Trump of his intention to take senior status effective July 1, 2018. Judge Lawrence will continue to render substantial judicial service as a senior judge. President Trump, with the guidance of Senators Joseph Donnelly and Todd Young, will nominate Judge Lawrence’s successor.

Free meditation class – Sahaja Meditation Indiana presents a free mediation class at 7 p.m. on Fridays. Learn to reduce stress and experience inner peace through meditation. The class will be held at Old National Bank, 1430 S. Range Line Rd. For more information, visit IndianaMeditation.org.

Entrepreneurship workshop – The Carmel Clay Public Library will host Discovering Your Inner Entrepreneur & Downtown Carmel from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29. Bruce Kimball, Carmel City Councilor will be the featured speaker. This will be a practical guide to evaluating entrepreneurship in 2018 and learning basic business models.

Helping Hands grant awarded – Thirteen local Allstate agency owners recently secured a $13,000 Allstate Foundation Helping Hands® grant to benefit the Children’s TherAplay Foundation. The grant will support Children’s TherAplay’s mission to provide children with special needs a foundation for developing life skills through horse therapy. Participating Carmel agents include: Casey Dehmer, Paul Lipps, Ranjit Puthran, and Patrick Terry.

Pedego named top dealer – Pedego Carmel was named a Top Pedego Dealer of the Year by Pedego Corp. at its annual dealer meeting held earlier this month. The award was given to Pedego Carmel for being among the top dealers to achieve the most sales of all 113 Pedego stores worldwide. The store is co-owned by Josh Freedman and Janet Sharp-Freedman.
