Geist Coffee Co. heads into second year strong, with new ideas

Geist Coffee Co. has enjoyed a successful first year in the location its predecessor closed after struggling financially.

Geist Coffee Co. bought the building at 10110 Brooks School Rd., Fishers, from Mama Bear’s Coffee in January 2018. Owner Jeremy Balch said the store hasn’t experienced any financial difficulties and is moving in a profitable direction.

“We bought what was left of Mama Bear’s, but they were going to close. They were probably the fourth owner having financial difficulty with it,” Balch said. “We are trying to change the business model enough so it’s sustainable and here long term for the community.”

Recently, the business began offering live music, open mic and game nights during evening hours. Balch also began highlighting a drive-thru window behind the store.

“The drive-thru has been here for 20 years, just no one knows about it,” Balch said. “I think the last few owners just played it down and may not have used it. We know that there’s definitely some people who have kids on their way to work and don’t want to get out of the car, so we’ve got it. It’s a drive-up window, so you order at the window.”

Balch said many customers call ahead to place orders for breakfast or coffee and then pick the order up in the drive-thru. To reach the drive-thru, customers must drive behind the Detour Bar and Grill, which is in the same business strip as Geist Coffee Co.

Balch said Geist Coffee Co. also recently redid its entire espresso bar.

“We have all new espresso equipment, and we rebuilt our whole front bar and are really focused on high-quality coffee and espresso drinks,” Balch said.

Typically, the store is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., but it stays open until 8 p.m. when live music and games are offered. To view a schedule of events at Geist Coffee Co., visit its Facebook and Instagram pages.

“It’s a great community gathering spot,” Balch said. “We see a lot of community meetings going on in here, which is exactly what we want.”
