Zionsville Community Schools is doing its part to educate the public about enrollment growth and the possibility of constructing a sixth elementary school by the start of the 2022-23 school year. Several upcoming forums will be conducted to address questions and concerns and provide an avenue for parents and community members to give input on the district’s plans.
During the Feb. 1 ZCS Board of Trustees meeting, Supt. Scott Robison outlined the district’s need for new facilities to accommodate enrollment growth. The district is expected to grow by more than 200 students each year for the next decade.
ZCS elementary schools are burdened the most. The schools reduced their preschool programming this year in order to accommodate for the K-4 growth.
““We have had to modify rooms to make new classrooms and modified computer labs to add classroom groups,” Robison stated. “We are moving clinic space out of Pleasant View Elementary School to recapture that space for instruction. If we don’t have new space, teachers will be displaced and some will have to move throughout the buildings for offerings such as art and music. We face the possibility of having to redistrict more than once, though our preference is to do this only one time.
“Without question, we will see an elevation in class sizes because we will not have room to add additional classes if we don’t take action to accommodate the growth by adding a sixth elementary facility.”
Robison said the new elementary school would likely be built at the County Road 875 campus. He also said the high school needs additional space to handle growth and noted that other schools and the transportation center on Ford Road require modifications to serve more students.
Additions to the high school could add up to 32 new classrooms.
