On Saturday, Dec. 6, beginning at 9 a.m. at St. Vincent Indianapolis, volunteers from throughout Central Indiana will bag, load and transport several truckloads of road salt for the 23nd Annual ERASE (Emergency Room Advice, Safety and Education) Salt Bagging Project. St. Vincent Indianapolis is a member ofAscension, the nation’s largest Catholic and not-for-profit health system.

At the conclusion of the project, free bags of road salt will be available for the public to pick up. Community residents are encouraged to drive up to the St. Vincent Indianapolis Emergency Department (2001 W. 86th St., Entrance 5) and take up to six free bags of road salt, beginning at noon.

St. Vincent has partnered with the city of Indianapolis and other local organizations to bag salt to reduce and prevent the number of emergency room visits related to falls on ice during the winter season.

The ERASE project is especially beneficial for the older adult and pediatric populations, who are advised to be more vigilant during the winter season. Common back injuries, wrist and ankle fractures can occur due to falls on ice.

The event will include volunteers filling bags of salt, refreshments and door prize drawings.

On Saturday, Dec. 19, St. Vincent Fishers will host its second annual ERASE Salt Bagging Project. Again, free bags of road salt will be available for pick-up at the Emergency Department entrance beginning at noon.
