Katherine Schilling

Katherine Lynne Schilling, 51, died March 17 at Family Hospice in Pittsburgh, Pa., of inflammatory breast cancer.

Schilling was educated at Boston University (EdD, 2002), at University of Pittsburgh (MLS, 1989), and at Susquehanna University (BA, 1986). She was a 1982 graduate of Valley High School, New Kensington, Penn.

Schilling was a medical librarian and teacher. She helped educate a generation of students in the evolving field of health informatics. She was tenured as an associate professor of health informatics at Indiana University in Indianapolis in 2011. She had taught in the School of Library Science there after serving as head of Information Management and Education in the Medical School Library at Boston University. She also worked as a medical librarian at University of Pittsburgh and as a librarian at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

Schilling was born Nov. 13, 1964, in East Orange, N.J., the second child of Judith Louise Stephenson Schilling and Peter Ernest Schilling. She grew up in New Kensington.

She is survived by her beloved daughter Matteline Eccles of Carmel, Ind., and her siblings Donna Ginader (Kenneth) of Dayton, Ohio, and Stephen Schilling (Nicole) of Fort Thomas, Ken. She is also survived by her parents, and by Robert Eccles.

She was the well-loved aunt of Christopher and Caroline Buchheit, and of Ava Ann, Eleanor Lynn, and William Schilling, with whom she did craft projects that produced a rich treasury of “kid art.” She enjoyed traveling with her family and spending time with family and friends.

A memorial service at United Presbyterian Church of New Kensington is scheduled for 1 p.m. April 2. Instead of flowers, donations in Schilling’s memory may be made to United Presbyterian Church, 601 Fifth Avenue, New Kensington, PA 15068.
