Carmel Clay Public Library to host senior tech petting zoo

By Lauren Boughner

The Carmel Clay Public Library is finishing a summer of technology classes for seniors with a Senior Tech Petting Zoo between 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 27. Seniors can bring their own device or try out a wide array of sample technology in the second floor training room at the library.

Katherine Huddle serves as the computer training and support specialist at the library and is the main organizer of the event.

“This is a no-pressure chance for you to come in and try things,” Huddle said.

Some of the devices available include Chrome books, Kindles, tablets, Ipads, Ipod touches, Macbook Air and some accessibility devices. Seniors can learn about “pocket talkers” for hearing disabilities and portable magnifying devices that are available through the library. The library’s “Book a Librarian” service and the free audiobooks and e-books offered through the library will be promoted.

Huddle said that a benefit of this event is that attendees will not be pressured to buy the devices.

“We just want to encourage seniors,” said Beth Jennemen, CCPL communications manager. “Don’t be intimidated to try this.”

“I hear from a lot of seniors, ‘I don’t have a use for that.’ We want to show all the different ways you can use technology,” Huddle said, adding that technology is a way for seniors to keep in touch with kids and grandkids.

The library requests that attendees bring any account information they may need in order to best learn how to use their own devices.
