Burglary suspect sought – Police are searching for a suspect believed to have committed several burglaries in southwest Carmel in the past year. He typically targets larger homes and takes jewelry, according to the Carmel Police Dept. The suspect is described as a tall, slender male with olive or light brown skin wearing a dark sweat suit. Anyone with information is asked to call 317-571-2500.

Learn about religions – The Carmel Interfaith Alliance presents Meet Your Neighbor, a series that focuses on a different religion with a guest speaker sharing teachings of that faith. The series will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays in October. Topics will include: Oct. 17 – Judaism; Oct. 24 – Hinduism; Oct. 31 – Mormonism. Because of large turnout, the location has moved to Carmel Christian Church, 463 E. Main St.

Legislative Literacy – A panel discussion will cover the inner workings of the Indiana State Legislature during its annual session. The program will be moderated and each panelist will be allowed to present their point of view in a timed period followed by an open Q&A session with the public. This event is a partnership between the League of Women Voters of Hamilton County, Women 4 Change Indiana, and the Carmel Clay Public Library. It will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 Fourth Ave. S.E., Carmel.

Humanities grant awarded – More than 25 libraries, schools, museums and other nonprofit organizations from Whiting to New Albany have received grants from Indiana Humanities this fall, including Carmel-based PATTERN. The grants support nonprofit organizations that sponsor public humanities programs such as exhibitions, workshops, lectures and reading and discussion programs.

Hurricane relief collections – For the next several weeks, all Carmel fire stations will serve as collection points for Good Samaritans Network’s hurricane relief efforts. Items they are collecting include: soap, razors, toothpaste, deodorant, other personal hygiene items, and non-perishable food items. Bottled water is not being collected at this time. Items can be dropped off any day of the week.

Youth volunteers – The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is looking for Indiana’s top youth volunteers of the year through Nov. 7. Students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service within the past 12 months. Democratic Women of Hamilton County – The Democratic Women of Hamilton County will meet at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 21 at the Fishers Library, 5 Municipal Drive. A speaker from the Sierra Club will present.

Highgarden Halloween – The Carrie Holle Group of Highgarden Real Estate will host the third annual Highgarden Halloween from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27, in the Carmel Arts & Design District. Princess Academy – The Accents Show Choir will host Princess Academy for kids ages 4 through 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 at Carmel High School. This event will include pampering (nails and princess hair), princess character meet and greet, royalty themed games, crafts, photo booth, story time, snack, and a performance for the parents by the kids. Free tutoring – Homework Hotline at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology offers free tutoring on math and science subjects to students in grades 6-12. Students may call 877-275-7673 to speak with a tutor, or go to the Homework Hotline website, AskRose.org, to interact with a tutor online or through email. Emailed questions are answered during the hotline’s hours of operation. Tutoring is available from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday during the school year.

Share the Spirit – The Carmel High School Cheerleaders present Share the Spirit at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at the CHS varsity gym (enter through door #21). Come watch routines from CHS Varsity, CHS JV, Creekside Middle School, Clay Middle School, and Pups Cheerleaders. Cost is $3 plus a donation of peanut butter or canned meat item. All donations will go to Central Indiana food banks and students in need.

Celebrations series – The Museum of Miniature Houses presents its series Celebrations of Creativity and Craftsmanship. Upcoming events include: Oct. 21 – Breyer Fun Day, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Enjoy the Breyer horses in our permanent collection, paint your own Breyer 4-inch Stablemate horse with materials provided, then take home your hand painted horse and goodies from Breyer as souvenirs; Oct. 25 – Nancy Miller presents her artistic gourds at noon. Admission is free.

Art Without Borders show – St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St., presents Nea Kavala Art Without Borders from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 24. Art Without Borders is a project started by Kayra Martinez to help refugee families in Greece express their emotions through art. Art will be on display and available to purchase, with proceeds going to the refugee families.

Town hall meetings – State Sen. John Ruckelshaus (R-Indianapolis) will host a series of bipartisan town hall meetings with State Reps. Carey Hamilton (D-Indianapolis) and Ed DeLaney (D-Indianapolis). The meetings will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St., on the following dates: Oct. 26 – Redistricting; Nov. 9 – Preview upcoming legislative session. Pumpkin Fest – The Mayor’s Youth Council and the Carmel Arts Council will host Pumpkin Fest from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at the City Hall Gazebo. This family-friendly event will feature music, food, pumpkin carving, costume contest and more. All proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish.

Legislative internships – Indiana House Republicans are now accepting internship applications for the 2018 legislative session. Internships are open to college sophomores, juniors and seniors, graduate students, and recent graduates of all majors. This paid program during the spring semester gives college students the chance to work one-on-one with state legislators while seeing firsthand how laws are made. Interns sought – The Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus is seeking interns to work at the Statehouse during the 2018 legislative session. Interns have the opportunity to improve their profession skill-set, work alongside policymakers and elected officials, and build their professional network. Congressional App Challenge – The 2017 Congressional App Challenge is open to students in the Fifth Congressional District who have not yet graduated from high school. The CAC is designed to engage students from across the country in computer science and coding. Students of any age, whether in elementary, middle, or high school are encouraged to compete by creating and exhibiting an app for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. Holiday tablescapes on display – Coxhall Mansion will host Holiday Tablescapes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 3 and 4. The event will feature table designs from local designers and florists, cookies, coffee and tea. Cost is $15 and proceeds will be used to support a landscaping project surrounding the mansion.

Joint pain seminar – Franciscan Health will offer a free seminar on overcoming hip and knee pain at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 4th Ave. SE.
