Semifinalists named – Eleven Zionsville Community High School seniors were among 16,000 semifinalists selected to compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million next spring. The students ranked among the top scorers of 1.6 million juniors nationwide during the 2016 PSAT.  The scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July.

Address resolution approved – The Town of Whitestown unanimously approved a resolution Oct. 11 that gives the town manager authority to request that the United States Postal Service allow Whitestown businesses to have the option of using “Whitestown” in their addresses. The town is served by four post offices and its businesses (and residents) currently use four different city names in addresses. Officials expect the change will lead to less confusion for business owners and their customers.

Rescue yard sale – Our Li’l Bit of Heaven Rescue will hold a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 21 at Zionsville American Legion, 9950 E. 600 S. The sale is open to the public and all funds raised will benefit the rescue.

Pumpkins and Hayrides – The Zionsville Lions Club presents Pumpkins and Hayrides from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 22 in Lions Club Park. This event is a free, family-friendly event to thank the patrons of the park. Activities will include: pumpkin painting, hayrides, games, food and more. Parking for this event is free as well. Food drive – Boone REMC is sponsoring a food drive during October to benefit The Caring Center. Members of Boone REMC – those who receive electricity from the cooperative – will receive one free LED light bulb for donating five canned food items for The Caring Center. Items can be brought to the Boone REMC office, 1207 Indianapolis Ave., from Oct. 1-31 during regular business hours from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Legislative Literacy – A panel discussion will cover the inner workings of the Indiana State Legislature during its annual session. The program will be moderated and each panelist will be allowed to present their point of view in a timed period followed by an open Q&A session with the public. This event is a partnership between the League of Women Voters of Hamilton County, Women 4 Change Indiana, and the Carmel Clay Public Library. It will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 Fourth Ave. S.E., Carmel.

Parks programs – Fall Scavenger Hunt, noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 19 at Zion Nature Center. Explore the forest in fall on this family friendly scavenger hunt. Turn in your card and collect your prize. Halloween Dog Walk, 6 p.m. Oct. 27 at Zion Nature Center. Dress yourself and your pooch up for this fun group dog walk through the Zion Nature Sanctuary. (This is also the last group dog walk in the Tails on the Trails series.)  Then enjoy a tasty treat, for both dogs and people, after our hike through the woods.

Father-son breakfast – Fathers and sons are invited to Zionsville All-Pro Dad’s Day Breakfasts. These monthly gatherings provide some father-son quality time while hearing great speakers at the same time. Meetings run from 7 to 8 a.m. at Zionsville Community High School on the following dates: Oct. 26, Nov. 16, Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 15 and April 19. Trunk or Treat – Christ Lutheran Church, 600 N. Ford Rd., will host Trunk or Treat from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27. In addition to trick-or-treating, there will be face painting, games, and a costume contest. This event is free and open to all children and families in the community. Free tutoring – Homework Hotline at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology offers free tutoring on math and science subjects to students in grades 6-12. Students may call 877-275-7673 to speak with a tutor, or go to the Homework Hotline website, AskRose.org, to interact with a tutor online or through email. Emailed questions are answered during the hotline’s hours of operation. Tutoring is available from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday during the school year.

Samaritan Fund benefit – Join the Cabin Counseling and Resource Center for a spook-tacular fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Nancy Noel Sanctuary, 75 N. Main St. Tickets are $40 each or $75 for a pair and include food, wine, beer, live entertainment, costume contest and more. Tickets can be purchased online at TheCabin.org. Adults only. All proceeds benefit the Samaritan Fund.

Legislative internships – Indiana House Republicans are now accepting internship applications for the 2018 legislative session. Internships are open to college sophomores, juniors and seniors, graduate students, and recent graduates of all majors. This paid program during the spring semester gives college students the chance to work one-on-one with state legislators while seeing firsthand how laws are made. Interns sought – The Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus is seeking interns to work at the Statehouse during the 2018 legislative session. Interns have the opportunity to improve their profession skill-set, work alongside policymakers and elected officials, and build their professional network. Interns receive a $750 bi-weekly stipend, scholarship opportunities, and may qualify for academic credit through their college or university. Congressional App Challenge – The 2017 Congressional App Challenge is open to students in the Fifth Congressional District who have not yet graduated from high school. The CAC is designed to engage students from across the country in computer science and coding. Students of any age, whether in elementary, middle, or high school are encouraged to compete by creating and exhibiting an app for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. Recycled art market – The Boone County Solid Waste District will host Do it Again Recycled Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 4 at SullivanMunce Cultural Center, 225 W. Hawthorne St. The event features twenty-five artists who create works of art from reclaimed items. There will also be a silent auction, education activities and make-your-own-art tables. This is a free, family-friendly event.

Candy buy back – Martine Dentistry, 7635 E. Stonegate Dr., will hold a candy buy back from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 6. Kids can bring in Halloween candy to sell to Dr. Martine for one dollar per pound. Dr. Martine will then ship the candy to Operation Gratitude for distribution to troops.

Book launch – St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church will host a book launch from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 7. Strange Journey tells the stories of two individuals who found themselves back at the door of the Catholic Church via interesting and unorthodox paths. Volunteer nominations sought – From now through Nov. 7. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is looking for Indiana’s top youth volunteers of the year. Students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service within the past 12 months. Waste Management board meeting – The Boone County Solid Waste Management District Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 16 at the County Annex Building, 116 W. Washington St., Room 105, Lebanon.

Lunch and Learn On the Road – Boone County Senior Services announces the 2017 lineup for Lunch and Learn On the Road. Lunch and Learn On the Road is for people age 60 and over who would like to travel with us by motor coach to see different parts of our state and learn something new, plus enjoy a special meal. The next event will be held Nov. 29. We will travel to Elkhart to explore the Ruthmere Mansion. The trip includes a lunch tea, entertainment, Christmas décor galore, and more. Dementia support group – Lewy Body Dementia affects about 1.4 million Americans and is the second most common cause of progressive dementia behind Alzheimer’s disease. The Metro Indy Lewy Body Dementia caregiver support group meets from 2 to 3:30 p.m. the second Thursday every month at Amore Pizzeria in Boone Village. Expansion announced – D-A Lubricant Company, Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of automotive lubricants, has announced plans to install a new production line at their headquarters in the Lebanon Business Park. D-A Lubricant estimates a $4.6 million personal property investment for the installation of the new production line. The expansion is scheduled to be completed within the next year.
