A local Hoosier was named Jiffy Lube’s #DoMore winner for August. After receiving The Salvation Army’s Metro Indianapolis 2021 Volunteer of the Year Award, Bill Shaw continues to share his time and talents with the local community and beyond.

Jiffy Lube’s #DoMore campaign honors community members who use their vehicle to make a difference in their community. #DoMore winners receive a year’s worth of complimentary vehicle maintenance services.

Landing in Indiana in 1995, Shaw wanted to find a way to fill his extra time as his children got older. Volunteering came naturally to Shaw, and he found a community within the Salvation Army volunteer group.

“All in all, I’ve had a very good life and I want to give back,” said Shaw, who lives in the Geist area.

After Shaw retired and had even more of his time to give, he started adding more volunteer days to his schedule. Every Wednesday, Shaw drives seniors to bingo. He picks them up from their homes and brings them back after the event has concluded.

As a member of The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services team, Shaw has traveled across the country to help areas and people in need. He spent two weeks helping with relief efforts for Hurricane Michael in Florida, and then the following year he went to Nebraska to help with flood relief efforts.

“Those were long days helping with Hurricane Michael,” Shaw said. “One of the things that people don’t realize until they do something like that is how people appreciate that you’re just there.”

Recently, he has been aiding in the Coats for Kids drive, helping manage donations and transporting coats to get cleaned before they are distributed. He also helps organize operations behind Angel Tree, one of The Salvation Army’s biggest drives during the holiday season.

“Just a few weeks ago there was a big fire on the south side,” Shaw said. “I was out there for 12 to 14 hours providing coffee, donuts, sandwiches, things of that sort to the firefighters.”

Shaw emphasized that it’s the people that make volunteering worthwhile – the other volunteers and the staff, along with the people that they are directly helping.

“There’s always something that you can help with,” Shaw said. “Even being a bell ringer at Christmas.”

As a gift, Jiffy Lube of Indiana is giving Shaw a year’s worth of vehicle maintenance services in an effort to keep him on the road and doing good for the Hoosier community.
